This year, besides the iPhone SE 2 launched in March, Apple will welcome the new decade with the new iPhone as well. The new phone will have the name of iPhone 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max if Apple continues to follow their phones line up. If there are no changes, Apple will release the new iPhone in the Autumn (September or October) this year. So what to expect from the new iPhone 12? There is no certain information yet, but let’s take a look at the leaks and rumors.
The new iPhone 12 will have the first design changes since the iPhone X in 2017. There are currently two conflicting predictions about the iPhone 12 design. The first one predicts that the iPhone 12 will have a design with flat, stainless steel edges instead of curved edges. This design has several similarities to the design of the iPad Pro and iPhone 4 series. Meanwhile, the other information shows that Apple will keep the rounded corners like the iPhone 11. But both sides all believe that the iPhone 12 will be thinner, at around 7.4 mm, while the iPhone 11 Pro Max is 8.1 mm. The iPhone 12 will be launched in four versions. Two standard versions of 5.4 inches and 6.1 inches, equipped with two camera lenses. The more advanced versions are 6.1 and 6.7 inches with three camera lenses.
The newest desirable feature in iPhone 12 is the unlimited display. It means that the notch in the previous version now will be reduced. In the new design, the front camera system called the TrueDepth camera system will stay hidden below the screen. Apple may also implement a smaller notch by integrating the front speaker for the device into the bezel. However, this feature may only appear in the more expensive versions.
All the new 2020 iPhone are expected to have full OLED display technology regardless of price. It is also possible that a 120Hz refresh rate screen could be included in some of the higher-end models.
In addition, there is information that the FaceID feature will also be replaced by the fingerprint scanner if Apple truly succeeds in the new design. Many fans have doubts about removing the notch on the iPhone 12 as well as replacing FaceID with TouchID. While Apple’s intention to bring TouchID back has been a long time ago, many tech lovers hope that FaceID and TouchID can work together and support each other, increasing the security of the iPhone many times.
Someone who revealed a lot of information about the iPhone 11, also revealed some information about the color of the new iPhone. Apple will supposedly launch a new color, Navy Blue, to succeeding the successful Midnight-Green of iPhone 11. However, it seems like Navy Blue may be only available to the Pro and Pro Max lines. There is also information about the potential rainbow of colors that may appear on the standard 12 including pink, purple, white, orange, green, black, (product) red, and blue.
In 2020, Apple will return to cooperate with Qualcomm to bring 5G connectivity to the new iPhone through the Snapdragon X55 Modem. Qualcomm will equip the X55 modem chip for all four versions of the iPhone 12. The X55 chip offers 7Gb/s peak download speeds and 3Gb/s upload speeds. However, the actual speeds will depend on the actual user’s network. The chip is Qualcomm’s first 5G chip that supports all major frequency bands, operation modes, and network deployments. The 5G connectivity will come in two categories: mmWave (faster but limited in range), and sub-6GHz (slower but with a wider range). There are some doubts about this new upgrade as 5G technology in the world is still not really popular. However, many fans hope that by the time Apple launches the new phone, 5G technology will achieve significant achievements.
Cameras and LiDar Scanner
Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro have recently been rated as one of the best camera phones on the market. This is thanks to the excellent night mode and next-gen Smart HDR. The iPhone 11 features a wide-angle and standard wide-angle lens, while the iPhone 11 Pro has a telephoto zoom. The standard iPhone 12 model is expected to use the same 2-lens setup as the iPhone 11. With the iPhone 12 Pro / Pro Max, they will have a 3-lens camera system and a new LiDAR scanner. You may find this camera design similar to the iPad Pro 2020.
Several analysts predict that the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max will feature 6GB RAM, up from 4GB on their predecessors. On the other hand, the standard iPhone 12 will most likely stick with 4GB RAM.
iPhone 12 is expected to use the A14 chipset. It is the successor of the A13 Bionic, the most powerful processor on mobile devices at the moment. According to 9to5Mac, with the A14 chip, the iPhone 12 will have the same power as the 15-inch MacBook Pro. As MacRumors reported, TMSC, a leading semiconductor circuit manufacturer in the world, will assume the responsibility of manufacturing chips for the new iPhone line of 2020.
There is also some information that iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will have 128GB and 256GB storage models. And the Pro and Pro Max will come in both of those and 512GB. Other leakers claim that the standard iPhone 12 will start at 64GB storage minimum and the higher models will start at 128 GB minimum.
While the 5G feature is currently very much appreciated by users, the downside is its significant battery drain. To compensate for this, the iPhone 12 Pro is claimed to have a 10% larger battery than the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Its battery will have a capacity of 4,400 mAh, which will be a great upgrade. This is necessary as the iPhone 12 Pro series support 5G, Full OLED display, and a 120Hz screen. These features consume a lot of battery. For comparison, the iPhone 11 Pro has a 3.46 mAh battery, while the largest iPhone 11 Pro Max also has a 3,969 mAh battery.
Different rumors intend that Apple will not include a power adapter or EarPods in the box with the iPhone 12 lines. The reasons for this to cut down on production costs and packaging. However, Apple may offer a 20W power adapter that can be bought separately. Rumors also indicating that Apple plans to offer a new braided cable design. There may be Lightning port on the iPhone 12, with Apple continuing to use Lightning instead of swapping over to USB-C.
There will be several new features to expect in the new iPhone 12 including new designs, new colors, and specs. However, all the information we have now is just from leaks and rumors. Currently, there is no specific information about the new features that the iPhone 12 will provide. Probably we will have to wait until September this year, during Apple’s annual event, to unveil the mystery of this flagship.
