watchOS 5: All new features and changes

Apple Watch is one of the most desired smartwatches on the market. Apple has been adding new features to its wearable device on a semi-regular basis to offer a better user experience. Last year, the Cupertino company announced the third-generation Apple Watch, with a lot of new changes. One such change lies in LTE connectivity. Apple Watch with LTE connectivity quickly dominates the market.

It remains unknown when Apple will launch the 4th gen Apple Watch, but watchOS 5 is officially available for testing purposes. At this year’s WWDC event, the Cupertino company debuted watchOS 5, the next generation wearable operating system.

watchOS 5 comes with a lot of new features while revamping the existing one. With watchOS 5, Apple continues to pour its love into health features, offering users more advanced options to access their Health data.

In the section below, we have created a list of the best features in watchOS 5. Before we proceed, note that watchOS 5 is now available as a developer beta for testing purposes. The final build is expected to make its debut in September alongside Apple’s new iPhone models.

  1. Walkie-Talkie

With watchOS 5, Apple is adding a new way to stay in touch with your friends and family. A cool app called Walkie-Talkie serves as a perfect means of communication among Apple Watch owners. Walkie-Talkie is one of the biggest additions to watchOS 5 this year.

The process is pretty simple. All you need to do is to add your friends or family members to the app and then select a contact from the list. After that, press and hold on the Talk button to start talking. Once you are done, your audio will be sent to the person you selected earlier.

  1. Activity competitions

Activity sharing feature has been an essential part of watchOS for a while. As the name implies, the feature allows you to share your activity scores with your friends and family. When you activate Sharing on your iPhone and Apple Watch, other people can view your workout progress and challenge them for motivation.

With watchOS 5, Apple has taken the Activity sharing to a whole new level. You now can challenge your friends to competitions. All you need to do is to invite another Apple watch owner to start an Activity competition. A competition usually lasts for a week, and participants can earn points to win.

  1. Auto-workout detection

Apple Watch serves as a good companion during your daily workouts. With watchOS 5, Apple’ wearable device now includes support for auto-workout detection. Basically, the feature will provide an alert every time you start a workout.

In other words, the feature will detect when you hit the gym and show you how to start the correct workout. Besides, the feature will remind you to leave your workout sessions after hours of inactivity.

According to Apple, auto-workout detection won’t work with all types of workouts. However, it supports popular workouts like running or walking.

  1. New running features

Apple Watch is an amazing device for those who love running. With watchOS 5, Apple provides users with more running option. From now on, you can measure your steps you take per minute for both indoor and outdoor runs. Besides, your Apple Watch will remind you if you are behind of your workout target.

  1. Apple Podcasts

With watchOS 5, your Apple Watch now acts as podcast streamer. That means that you can sync your favorite music tracks and audiobooks to your Apple Watch, so you can listen to them while running or walking. This is a great feature as it eliminates the need to carry the iPhone on you. This is definitely something we have been dying for in recent years.

  1. Better Siri

Apple Siri is one of the best personal helpers on the market. Apple has been improving its virtual helper since the launch day to take on the likes of Samsung. Apple’s Siri now works smoothly with Apple Watch, offering users a new way to control their wearable device.

In watchOS 5, Apple updated the Siri watch face, making it much smarter and more intuitive. Siri now can learn from your daily habits and heart rhythm to offer workout suggestions. The Siri watch face also shows content from third-party apps such as the Mobike network, Glow Baby, and Nike+ Run Club.

  1. Student ID cards

Apple has been trying to expand its presence in schools worldwide. With watchOS 5, students now can use their Apple Watch as student ID Cards for access to libraries, events, and dorms. All you need to do is to add their ID card details to their Wallet app on Apple Watch. Apple has been in talks with a lot of universities in the US to expand the feature in the country.
