The new 10.2 inch iPad for Apple fans probably seems quite mediocre compared to the other options on the market. This iPad is known as the “entry -level” iPad for a reason. It will give you the simple pleasure of having an iPad for surfing the web and streaming videos. It’s not there to blow people away, but it’s saying: “this is what an iPad typically does, but there’s more if you’re interested.”
The Affordable iPad
I would say that if this was your first Apple product, you’re making a good investment. An investment that you’ll most likely upgrade in the future. There’s a reason why it’s one of the top brands in the industry. Even the worst iPad is better than some other companies best tablets. Having said that, if you’re looking for something for a more serious project, it might be worth investing a bit more and looking at an iPad Air or even an iPad Pro. I think someone new to Apple products will see the iPad Pro as an indulgence that’s not for them. But if it’s going to be a serious, day in, day out project, you’re probably looking for the iPad Pro.
having an iPad is great, but if you’d like it to replace your laptop, the new iPad comes with a smart connector. This means you can use a case with a keyboard, making an easily transportable laptop, effectively. The iPad is also compatible with the Apple Pencil but unfortunately not with the superior Apple Pencil 2. Even so, it will still be good for simple design needs.
A Familiar Feel
The new 10.2 inch retina display does make it great for watching movies or streaming videos, however, it’s not really that new. It’s the same tech from the old iPad, but with a slightly larger size. This isn’t to say that it isn’t a good screen, because it still is. It’s just that there are better screens out there. The same can be said about the A10 chip. There hasn’t been any improvement there which is a shame. The A10 chip is still powerful, but for fans of Apple Arcade, sooner or later, it’ll be outdated. Especially after the release of the amazing A13 Bionic, you’d expect them to give this iPad a bit of a boost.
It’s not All Bad
OK, I realize that I’ve been focusing on all the bad points so far. But there really are a lot of good features here too. Here’s just a few of them:
- iPadOS – A huge upgrade to the OS on the iPad
- 10 hour battery life – Great for gamers and streamers alike
- Front and back cameras – The built-in FaceTime HD camera and 8MP back camera
- Thin, light and durable – It’s not going to weigh you down when you’re on the go
- Apple Arcade compatible – You can also connect your PS4 or Xbox controller
- Apple TV compatible – At the moment, you get a year’s subscription for free
If you’re looking for an upgrade to your current model, this isn’t for you. but if you want an iPad that will be used for the basics, no intensive work loads, then this is the one for you. It is by far the most affordable out of all the iPads and a great introduction into what Apple is capable of.
