Just got a new PC? How to transfer data from your old PC to new PC

Windows-based PCs are insanely popular out there. Computers with Windows 10 pre-loaded offers a smooth performance and exciting features. Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system provides multiple customization options like changing the color of desktop, adding shortcuts to Control Center, or installing background photos.

If you are planning to buy new Windows PC, then you will need to make sure that all your important types of data make the switch with you. In reality, Microsoft is making the transfer process much easier than before, mainly thanks to its own storage service, OneDrive. However, there are a number of different ways you can transfer your data from your old PC to a new one.

In this guide, we are going to walk you through the steps on how to transfer data from your old PC to a new PC. Before we begin, make sure you now have a modern version of Windows 10 installed on your device.

  1. OneDrive

OneDrive is one of the leading storage services on the market. Microsoft has been adding new features and skills to its service since the day one in an attempt to take on Dropbox or Google Drive. OneDrive is built directly into Windows 10’s file explorer, meaning that you don’t need to download the app from the Store.

OneDrive allows you to store almost everything in the cloud, ranging from photos to videos. Like Dropbox, OneDrive offers 5 GB of storage space for free and other upgrade subscriptions. If you want to upgrade to 50GB of storage, you are looking at around $2 per month, which is pretty cheap. 1TB of storage space will charge you $7 per month.

Transferring your files to OneDrive is pretty simple. All you need to do open the app on Windows 10 and follow the instructions to upload your files. Once you are done, open your new PC, sign in with your OneDrive account and download your data.

  1. External Drive

If you don’t want to use OneDrive, then you can get an external drive to transfer your data from your old PC to a new one. With an external drive, you can store everything you find on your old PC. All you need to do is to buy an external drive out there. Pricing varies depending on the storage size. If you already have an external drive, then make sure you use it.

Transferring data from your old PC to a new PC is pretty simple. All you need to do is to plug your hard drive into your old PC and then move your files from your PC onto your drive (the process may take a while depending on how much data you wish to move over). Once done, plug your drive into your new PC and then transfer your data to your new PC.

An external drive also serves as a tool that makes sure that your files are safe and sound. If something goes wrong, you can wipe your PC and then restore your data using an external drive.

  1. PCmover Express

PCmover Express is a great software that allows you to transfer your data from your old PC to a new PC. Back in 2015, Microsoft partnered with Laplink to offer PCmover Express for free. The program makes your transfer process less painful, thanks to its advanced features.

PCmover Express is not free now as it costs $29.95. However, you can get the software right now for half its original price for a limited time. To use the program, make sure all of your devices are now connected to the internet.

All you need to do is to download the app, then launch it on your PC and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the transfer. If you want to transfer your applications, then you can upgrade to PCmover Professional for $50.

  1. Use a transfer cable

Using a transfer cable is one of the easiest ways to transfer your data from your old PC to your new PC. All you need to do is to prepare a transfer cable and plug it into both devices. Once you are done, move all your files from your old PC to your new one.

However, if you want to move over your apps, then you will need help from a third-party software out there. Make sure you create a backup of your files in case something comes up during the process. You can get the Windows transfer cable from Plugable for $30 or shop for more at Amazon.com.
