How to free up hard drive space on Windows 10

Windows 10 is one of the best desktop operating systems Microsoft has ever released to the public. Microsoft’s latest Windows version retains what’s best of Windows 8 and Windows 7 while including a lot of new things. Windows 10 has been through a number of major software updates. And it’s now at a point where you can completely ignore the classic Windows XP.

If you have been using your Windows 10-based computer for a long time, then at some point you may have wanted to clean up the mess that takes up a large amount of your space. In reality, your computer’s hard drive tends to fill up with tons of pictures, videos, apps, and games. Fortunately, Windows 10 includes some built-in tools that help you reclaim some lost hard drive space on Windows 10.

In this guide, we have created a list of the best ways to free up hard drive space on Windows 10. Before we begin, make sure you now have the latest software update of Windows 10 installed on your computer.

  1. Storage Sense

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes Storage Sense, a handy tool that helps you quickly get rid of junk files when you are low on storage space. Specifically, the feature automatically files that have been in the recycle bin for 30 days. The coolest part is that you can use Storage Sense to remove the previous installation of Windows 10 to get some space.

However, Storage Sense is not enabled by default on Windows 10. To turn it on, open Settings on your computer, then click on System and click on Storage. Now just simply turn on the switch for Storage Sense.

Once you do that, Windows 10 will automatically remove junk files stored on your device. This includes temporary files and junk files that have been in the Downloads folder. If you want to delete files that have been in the recycle bin for less than 30 days, then you need to configure Storage Sense.

Specifically,  you can configure Storage Sense so it automatically removes files after a specific period of time. To do this, click on Change how we free up space automatically option and then select your option from the list.

  1. Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup has been part of Windows 10 for years, allowing you to clean up the mess in your hard drive. This eliminates the need for a third-party app to be installed on your machine. Starting with the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, you can quickly delete junk files using Control Center and Settings.

To remove files using Settings (make sure you now have Windows 10 April 2018 Update installed on your device), open Settings on your computer, then click on System and hit Storage. After that, select the Free up space now link and select all the items you wish to remove. Now just simply click the Remove Files button at the top.

To remove junk files using Control Panel, simply launch File Explorer on your computer, then right-click the hard drive running out of space and select Properties. After that, click on Disk Cleanup, then hit Cleanup system files option and check all files you wish to remove. Once you are done, hit OK and click the Deleted Files button.

  1. Un-install all apps and games you no longer need

If you are still low on storage space, then the next step is to remove all apps and games you no longer need. The process is pretty simple and we will show you how below.

Step one: Open Settings on your computer and then click on Apps

Step two: Next up, click on Apps & Features and then select an app you wish to remove

Step three: Now just simply hit the Uninstall button and click Uninstall again to confirm your action.

  1. Disable hibernation

Hibernation takes up a large amount of your storage space on Windows 10. If you hardly use the feature, then it’s a good idea to disable it to get some storage space. However, the process may not be known to many folks out there.

To disable hibernation on Windows 10, open Start, then search for Command Prompt and perform a right-click on the result. After that, select Run as administrator and type the following command powercfg /hibernate off and then hit Enter to complete the task.

  1. Update files to the cloud

You can upload all of your files to the cloud using a storage service out there. You can use Microsoft OneDrive, one of the most popular storage services on the market. Microsoft’s storage service offers 5 GB of storage space for free. There are also alternatives to OneDrive, including Dropbox, Google Drive, Mega, and even more.
