Backing up your iPhone or iPad is one of the smartest things to do if you want to secure your precious data from prying eyes. If you still rely on iTunes to back up your iOS devices, then the bad news is that Apple officially killed iTunes in macOS Catalina, paving the way for three apps, including Apple TV, Apple Music, and Apple Podcasts.
In macOS Catalina, you can rely on the Finder to back up your iPhone or iPad. This is similar to how you back up your device to a hard drive. And we will show you how in the section below.
Keep in mind that you are going to need macOS Catalina and iOS 13/iPadOS to do this. That means you are going to be on the beta which is a little bit buggy.
What is Finder?
Finder has been a big part of macOS since day one, providing access to folders, files, and control menus on your Mac. In macOS Catalina, the Finder acts as an iTunes alternative when it comes to backing up your iPhone or iPad.
In reality, your iOS device will show up in the left column under the Locations section when you connect it to your Mac. Bear in mind that you will be asked to trust your Mac if this is the first time you are trying to pair your iOS device with a Mac. From you here, you can check for update or restore your iPhone or iPad from a recent backup.

How to Restore your iPhone or iPad in macOS Catalina
If you now have a backup of your iOS device, then you can easily restore your iPhone or iPad from it. It’s a good idea to have a full backup of your device as things sometimes go wrong.
Step one: Connect your iPhone or iPad to a Mac using a Lightning cable and then select your device under the Locations section.
Step two: Click on Restore iPhone or iPad on the right side menu.
Step three: Now, select a backup you wish to restore your iOS device from (you may be asked to enter the password for that backup if you have backup encryption enabled.
Step four: Hit the Restore button to start the restore process.
How to Remove an iOS Backup from your Mac
If you now have multiple iOS backups on your Mac, then it’s a good idea to delete a backup you no longer need. To do this, select your device when it shows up in the Finder, then click on Manage Backups and you should see a list of all of your backups. Select one backup and click Delete Backup.
You can also use the Finder to sync music, TV shows, and podcasts to your iPhone or iPad. To do this, select your device when it shows up in the Finder window and you should see a list of all of your categories including Movies, TV Shows, Audiobooks, Photos, and more.
The method used to back up your iPhone or iPad in macOS Catalina is different than past macOS versions. The Finder now serves as an ideal iTunes alternative when it comes to backing up your iOS device.
