Google Pixel 3: All rumors, release date, and features

Back in 2016, Google made its first steps into the hardware market by unveiling the Pixel and Pixel XL. Both devices received a wide welcome, with praise directed at their premium design and excellent camera performance. Google shipped millions of Pixel units every quarter, helping Google grab some market ground.

In 2017, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL followed the huge success of their previous models out there. The second generation Pixel phone is a big upgrade when compared to the original series. Specifically, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, coupled with 4GB of RAM.

The 2nd generation Pixel models are among the best-selling phones out there. Google is expected to announce the third generation Pixel devices this year. The Menlo Park-based firm was previously rumored to debut Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL at a launch event in August, but it skipped it. Tech experts say that Google needs more time to work on them this year.

We are expecting to see a lot of new things at this year’s event. However, with a lot of contradictory rumors, it’s hard to tell what’s coming in this year’s Pixel phones. With that in mind, we have gathered everything we know so far about Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

  1. Release date

Google has its tradition of unveiling new Pixel phones in October. Last year, the Menlo Park firm debuted the second generation Pixel flagship phones on October 4. Sources claim that this year’s Pixel phones will be announced on the same date, but things have changed.

Google recently confirmed that the company will hold an event in New York on October 9. Specifically, the upcoming event will start at 8:00 AM PT/11:00 AM ET and we will see the unveiling of new Pixel phones and other hardware products.

Google has begun sending out invitations to the event. Apart from the new Pixel phones, Google is expected to debut new wireless headphones at the event and a cheaper Google Home. For some background, Google Home is a smart speaker that puts Google in contention with Amazon on the market. Google has sold nearly 4 million smart speakers so far and the number is set to grow in the coming months.

  1. Design

Pixel lineup of flagship phones offer a stunning design with an aluminum back and great display. In reality, Google heavily relies on third-party brands to manufacture its own smartphones. Last year, HTC and LG were in charge of manufacturing Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. However, things are going to change so much this year.

Sources claim that Google has been looking for manufacturers of its future Pixel phones for years. Some reliable reports say that Google and Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile reached an agreement that will see the Taiwanese firm manufacture Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

In reality, FIH Mobile is not a new name on the market as the company is producing Nokia-branded phones. Foxconn is one of the biggest manufacturers out there, as the Taiwanese company will be providing Apple with mobile chips until 2023. Besides, Foxconn will be supplying Samsung with chips for future Galaxy phones.

According to leaks, this year’s Pixel phones will feature an all-glass back with smaller bezels. If this is the case, it seems that Google will move away from its traditional aluminum body. Besides, the upcoming Pixel phones might feature a notch at the top, just like the iPhone X.

Rumors claim that the Pixel 3 will pack with a single camera at the rear and two on the front. And, the bigger device will feature a dual-camera setup on the back. Some reliable sources say that Google will remove the headphone jack from this year’s Pixel phones to catch up with the latest design trend. Instead, the phone will be bundled with a set of USB Type-C headphones.

  1. Specs

The third-generation Pixel phones is expected to come with what’s best of software and hardware. Specifically, the device runs Android 9.0 Pie at launch. Android Pie is the latest version of Android operating system that includes a lot of new features. The adoption of Android 9 is promising a much-improved performance when compared to its previous versions.

Under the hood, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM and an Adreno 630 GPU. Besides, the display will sport a resolution of 1,440 x 2,960 pixels. When it comes to the cameras, Google will improve the lens and portrait mode, allowing for a better photo quality in low-light conditions. Other rumored specs include a 3,430mAh battery and 64GB of internal storage.

The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are expected to make a great hit at launch this year. The new pair will put Google in an intense contention with Apple and Samsung.
