Apple iPhone XR vs Samsung Galaxy S10e: Which one is right for you?

Apple and Samsung have been contesting for market ground for years. Both brands now sell great flagship phones out there and it’s hard to tell who is winning the fight. The South Korean is having its upper hand on the market as iPhone sales have been showing signs of a slowdown in recent years. However, competition could get a jump start this year if Apple does launch its 2019 iPhone lineup.

Last month, Samsung announced the S10 lineup after months of leaks and rumors. The Galaxy S10e was a surprise at the event as there was no mention of it prior to the announcement. The release of the S10e puts Samsung in contention with Apple in the budget-friendly phone segment.

In reality, the Galaxy S10e is now ready to take on the iPhone XR, Apple’s first budget phone in the iPhone series. Like their siblings, the S10e and the XR feature a beautiful look with smaller bezels and excellent camera setup. However, they are less expensive than the other devices as both start at $749. This price difference was achieved by downgrading certain specs.

If you are confused between the Galaxy S10e and iPhone XR, then I have you covered. In the section below, I am going through all the key similarities and differences between the two, so you can find out which one is better for you.

  1. Price

iPhone XR and Galaxy S10e come with a much cheaper rate when compared to their siblings. In reality, they are not that cheap as both start at $749 in the US. For that price, you will get great phones with amazing camera snappers and optimized OS.

If you go for the like of Samsung, you will get a model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Meanwhile, the iPhone XR only has 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. If the storage space is all that matters, then the Samsung Galaxy S10e is a better choice.

  1. Design and display

Basically, both iPhone XR and Galaxy S10e look a lot like their siblings. However, there are still some slight differences. As for the iPhone XR, Apple retains the design language from the iPhone X, but it uses a Series 7000 aluminum chassis and IP67 certification instead of stainless steel chassis. The IP67 means the XR can go as deep as 1m only.

The Samsung Galaxy S10e sports a 5.8-inch display while it’s a 6.1-inch panel on the XR. Basically, the S10e is smaller than its S10 and S10 Plus, thus giving a firm grip compared to the XR. This seems fair as the XR has larger bezels than iPhone XS and XS Max. In reality, the iPhone XR’s display is a step down when compared to its siblings. The adoption of an LCD display results in a lower resolution. The Galaxy S10e, on the other hand, features an AMOLED display without notch at the top. There is no doubt that the S10e has a higher resolution screen.

The biggest difference between the two lies in the ports. In reality, the Samsung Galaxy S10e retains a 3.5mm headphone and a USB-C connector, while the iPhone XR has a lightning port only. This seems plausible seeing that most iPhones now adopt lightning ports on the market.

  1. Cameras and battery

The Samsung Galaxy S10e features a dual-camera setup – a 12MP main snapper and a 16MP super-wide f/2.2 shooter, while the iPhone XR has a single camera setup with f/1.8, smart HDR, and Portrait mode. Basically, both devices offer stunning photos in low-light conditions. The new camera sensor on the XR allows for wider dynamic range while recording videos in 30fps. The Galaxy S10e, on the other hand, comes with scene optimizers, a cool feature that uses AI to recognize subjects around you and automatically adjusts picture quality. The iPhone XR supports smart HDR that also uses AI to get the best photos. Basically, smart HDR adds better color accuracy, increased highlight and more shadow detail to your photos.

As for battery life, the Galaxy S10e is packed with a 3,100mAh battery, whereas the iPhone XR has a 2,942mAh one. In reality, the iPhone XR can last a full work day with moderate use. And we are expecting the same thing on the Galaxy S10e. Both devices support wireless charging, while the S10e features reverse wireless charging.

Both iPhone XR and Galaxy S10e are among the best offerings on the market. The XR stands out thanks to its new hardware and optimized iOS. The Galaxy S10e, on the other hand, is a budget alternative to its bigger siblings.
